Sophia Shelby Beck moved with her husband, Henry Beck, to Michigan from Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1835. They lived near Macon, then Tecumseh where Henry managed a hotel called Brownsville House, and later to Woodstock where they purchased a farm. They had seven children, including Margaret Jane Beck, James Monroe Beck, Catherine A. Beck, Caroline Elizabeth Beck, and Anna Marie Beck.

Henry served in the Mexican War with Gen. Scott and reportedly died on the return trip in 1847 near Joliet, Illinois.

Sophia died in Meridian, Ingham County, Michigan on April 11, 1875 at 74 years of age. She is presumed buried in or near Ingham County, Michigan.
