SERVICES: Funeral service for will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik with the Rev. Rebecca Wentworth officiating. Visitation one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at a later date in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.
Irene Rouha Sherek, 94, of Biwabik, died Friday, April 11, 2008, in the White Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Aurora.
She was born May 29, 1913 in Crosby, Minn., to Andrew and Mary Koski. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Biwabik High School. Irene worked in various capacities at the Biwabik Co-op and Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory. She served as a nurse for Dr. Blackmore at Erie Mining Company. Irene was a member of Community United Church of Christ and its women's fellowship.
Survivors include her sons, Gary (Sophia) Valimaki of Aurora and Rolly (Darlene) Valimaki of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter, Pamela (Mark) Winner of Holland, Mich.; grandchildren, Greg Valimaki, Eric (Christi) Valimaki, Kristopher Winner, Jacque Lade, Kathryn May, Shawn Hackensmith, Sara Apolinar and Dawn Mistretta; great-grandchildren, Aleksandria, Austin, Grace, Shaye, Casey, Jose', Terrence, Maya, Katie and Christopher; and several special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Frank, in infancy; parents; husband, Frank "Blackie" Sherek; sister, Lillian Mattson; and grandchildren, Richard and Roberta Valimaki.
