Janice Marie Bernstein

Resident of Livermore

Nov. 1, 1937 - March 13, 2016

Janice “Jan” Marie Sherman Bernstein, loved to travel. A lot. She particularly liked going to places on other continents. The further the better. Some of her favorite trips included a river cruise through Russia, visiting China, touring and spending several weeks in a small village of France and seeing Italy. Sunday she departed on her final trip.

Perhaps Jan’s love of travel stemmed from the diverse places she has lived. She was born in Deadwood, SD to Louis and Avis Sherman. The original hospital receipt shows her birth cost a whopping $54.90.

Jan would fondly recall her years living in Lead, SD, particularly her memories of driving the neighbor kids around the Black Hills in her parents’ car when she was only 10 years old and of riding a horse bareback with her friend and tourists taking pictures after mistaking them for Native American Indians. Jan and her family eventually moved to a completely opposite climate and culture: Los Alamos, NM and then finally settled in Livermore in 1953.

Jan graduated from Livermore High School. The friends Jan made at Livermore High School, she treasured her entire life.
Matriculating from the Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing in 1958, Jan worked as a registered nurse at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek. Jan very proudly participated in the historic Harvard Nurses Health Study from its inception and enjoyed reading articles about the information gleaned from the study.

In May 1960, she married Bernard “Bernie” Bernstein in Livermore. For their honeymoon they drove to Lead and Deadwood, SD via Yellowstone Park. When they got home, Jan went back to work at the hospital while her new husband was inducted in to the Army and sent off to basic training. Twelve weeks later they packed their car and moved to Geneva, NY where Bernie was stationed. Jan worked at Geneva General Hospital until shortly before their first child was born in August 1961.

Upon their return to California in 1962, they settled once again in Livermore where their remaining three children were born. Jan was a loving and attentive mother. She was also an amazing grandmother. She had a knack for taking care of infants and could get even the fussiest of babies to stop crying and smile within seconds. She was an active school volunteer first as a nurse and later in the classroom at Arroyo Mocho Elementary School. She also spent several years supporting the Granada High School Marching Band.
Her hobbies, besides traveling, included reading, sewing and needlework.

Jan is survived by her loving husband Bernard; devoted children Steven Bernstein of Brussels, Belgium, Kenneth Bernstein of Livermore, Jeanne Lynch of Granite Bay and John Bernstein of Willow Glen; grandchildren Nicholas and Andrew Bernstein of Danville, Laleh, Sara, Eleanor and James Bernstein of Brussels, Kevin, Madison, Rebecca and Brett Bernstein of Livermore, Ryan, William and Julia Lynch of Granite Bay and Emily Lynch of Arcata; and numerous cousins and friends. She will be missed terribly. Her passing will leave a huge void in all of their lives.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joyce Sherman.

Burial will be at Memory Gardens, Livermore, after a private family service.
