Sherman - Record - Criteser Dorothy Emma Sherman - Record - Criteser was born June 20,1920 to Eugene D. Sherman and Catherine Lindt Sherman in El Monte, CA. At age four Dorothy moved with her parents to Tehama, County then to Shasta County the next year. Her elementary education was primarily at Igo, Bowman, Gas Point, Farquhar, and Ono schools. Dorothy and some of her siblings were asked to live with other families or teachers so that there would be a minimum of seven students to hire a teacher for a school to keep it open. Dorothy graduated in1938 from Shasta High School in Redding, CA. Then she took a big leap and moved to the Richmond district of San Francisco to attend and graduate from Cosmetology School. While there she made new friends and including Dodie Record from Greenfield, CA. At Christmas that year Dorothy went home with Dodie and met her big brother Harold. June 22,1940 Dorothy married Harold Edward Record in Reno, NV. They had two children Robert and Michael. Since Harold worked in heavy construction they moved frequently, mostly in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Their last home together was in Cottonwood, CA. After Harold's death Jan 11,1969, Dorothy went to work selling prepaid funeral plans for a mortuary in Redding, CA. While calling on potential clients she met Ralph Criteser. After a courtship they married at his home in Central Valley now Lake Shasta City, CA. December 25,1970. Mom loved to grow flowers and vegetable gardens, canning her fruits and vegetables, she also made sauerkraut and cured olives. Dorothy knitted, sweaters, and crocheted lovely blankets and soft cuddly animals for the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ralph and Dorothy went hunting for deer and fishing for salmon bringing home their catch and preserving it. She also wanted to work out of the home and became an Avon Lady. Dorothy excelled at this and was frequently in the top five award winners for her region. When Ralph's Alzheimer's became severe she moved to Fortuna to be near him near his care facility. Her son, Michael and his family lived in Fortuna also. While there Mom began growing violets and joined the Violet Society. While in Fortuna, she also became a member of the Later Day Saints, Fortuna Ward. She is preceded in passing to God by her parents and siblings Lynn Marcus Sherman, Stella Rose Sherman Neyman, Edna Catherine Sherman Eaks , Alberta Gertrude Sherman Hawk, Harold Sherman, Ralph Eugene Sherman, both of her husbands Harold Record and Ralph Criteser, and a grandsons Richard Raymond, Reuben James, and Adam Joseph, also several nieces and nephews. Dorothy is survived by her brother Donald Lawrence, Sons Robert (Brooke) and Michael (Diana) she has ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren along with several nephews and nieces and their families. Dorothy passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, August 2,2010. At that time she was living at Especially You Assisted Living in Eureka. It is her wishes to be cremated with no service and the ashes be interred in the grave of her first-husband Harold at the Cottonwood Cemetery, Cottonwood, Shasta County, CA.
