Madeline Showell Handy was born October 22, 1932, in Bishopville, Maryland to the late Harry and Mary Laws Showell. She departed this life on November 26, 2012, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland surrounded by her loving family. She attended schools in Sussex County, Delaware and Worcester County, Maryland. On February 19, 1950, Madeline was united in holy matrimony to Edward P. Handy. She worked at H&H Poultry in Selbyville, Delaware and Get Smart, Inc. in Ocean City, Maryland. You could always find her sitting at the kitchen table doing her “Penny Press” word search puzzles or standing at the door watching her great grands ride their scooters. Madeline leaves to mourn her husband of 62 years, Edward P. Handy of Selbyville, Delaware, three daughters, Gloria (Paul) Pugh of Westover, Maryland, Mary Ellen Handy of Bishopville, Maryland and Annette Handy of Selbyville, Delaware, a stepson Bill (Terry) Smith, a stepdaughter Diane Purnell, both of Berlin, Maryland, eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a special nephew Clifton Showell, Jr. of Felton, Delaware, a special cousin Gordon (Mamie) Purnell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Peggy Showell, grandson Calvin Handy and her brothers Wallace Showell and Clifton Showell, Sr. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Zoar United Methodist Church in Selbyville, Delaware, where family and friends may call two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Zoar Golden Acres Cemetery in Bishopville, Maryland.
