Eugenie S Hill Barrett was born 9.6.1927 in St. Louis Mo. to Lemuel and Lucielle Showell. She had one younger sister, Anne Marie Showell and went to school at Holton-Arms school for girls in Washington DC. Her family bought a farm in Sunshine Maryland when she was 10 years old where she devoloped a love for animals. She graduated from Randolf-Macon College in Ashland Virginia in 1949. She met her first husband, Alex Hill prior to WWII and they were married when he returned from oversea duty in the U.S. Navy. She worked briefly as a high school french teacher prior to having their son, Rob Hill in 1956. They moved around a bit during this time while her husband worked as a salesman for Formica living variously in St. Louis, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Jackson Ms but finally settled in Memphis in 1963 when Alex started Building Plastics Incorporated, BPI. Janie worked there part time in bookkeeping as she supported Alex in his founding of this very successful venture until his death in 1995.

Janie had a bout with breast cancer at this time but survived it to remarry Bill Barrett in 2000. They split their time between Memphis and Tappahannock Va. and traveled extensively.

She lost Bill to cancer in 2008. Janie moved into Trezevant shortly thereafter where she enjoyed the bookclub among other activities.

She passed away 6.29.2015 after suffering a bout of pneumonia in March that weakened her greatly. She had been wheelchair bound for years after her prosthetic hip became inoperable due to declining health and is survived by her son, stepchildren and sister.
