Joan Gulbin, 87

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Longtime Westerleigh resident Joan A. Gulbin, 87, the loving matriarch of three generations who achieved national renown as a dog breeder, died yesterday at home.

Born and raised Joan Smith in Brooklyn, she graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School.

Mrs. Gulbin moved to Westerleigh in 1953.

A homemaker and devoted wife and mother, she also bred champion miniature Schnauzers, and was active in dog shows for many years.

Mrs. Gulbin was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton.

Her daughter, Barbara Gulbin, died in 1995.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, John F.; her three sons,; her daughter; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Harmon Home For Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
