Memorial service for Jessie Smith Barton, 93, will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Greenville. Burial will be private.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.


Mrs. Barton, wife of the late W. Stribling Barton, died Monday, January 28, 2008, at Wildewood Downs, Columbia, where she had resided for several years. Born in Belton, she was a daughter of the late Richard D. and Madison E. Smith. She was a 1935 graduate of Furman University, with a major in English Literature and later received her Masters of Arts degree from Duke University. She served as an instructor of English at Furman, 1936 - 1942. From 1956 - 1976, Jessie was employed by the School District of Greenville, S.C., principal first of Crestone and Julia Charles Elementary Schools, with her final assignment, Mitchell Road Elementary. While president of the Greenville County Education Association, she served on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Education Association. Jessie had been an active member of Democratic Women in Greenville and she had served as volunteer tutor through First Baptist Church. She became a member of the Richard Furman Society in 1998. Her granddaughter, Ashley, is a member of Furman's class of 2002.

Surviving are children, Andrea B. Little of Winston-Salem, N.C., Chandler B. Cox and her husband, Michael, of Columbia, Stribling S. Barton and his wife, Barbara, of Columbia, M. Madison Barton of Greenville and Jane B. Dooley and her husband, Dan, of New Cannan, Conn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe R. and Bessie Smith of Lexington and Richard D. Smith and Wilma of Columbia; sister and brother-in-law, Cecile S. and Charles Bannister of Anderson; sister-in-law, Mary C. Smith of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren and their spouses, Catherine L. and Jason Geddings of Simpsonville, Conrad B. and Heidi Little of Oak Ridge, N.C., Ashley B. and Steve Krusinski of Columbia, Amy B. and Quinton Broom of Miami, Fla., Leigh Ann Barton of Greenville, Audrey J. Dooley of Charleston, Daniel V. Dooley and William C. Dooley, both of New Canaan, Conn.; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Alexia, Jane, Julia and Conrad; and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
