Obituary - Serving tirelessly and with all of her heart, Rayola Smith Gordon Barnes Allen served as site council manager and president of the Draper Senior Citizen Center. Holding membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was a Relief Society President, Primary President, and Stake YWMIA president. Captain of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, she loved genealogy and temple work and was an avid historian.
Born in Riverdale, Idaho, the fourth of ten children to Robert Lauritz and Doris Bennett Smith, she married William Vernon Gordon in the Salt Lake Temple May 3, 1934. He preceded her in death while serving heroically in World War II. She married Max Miner Barnes June 7, 1947 and together they lovingly cared for her mother until her death. To children in need of love, Rayola and Max were foster parents for many. They adopted and raised three children. Preceding her in death after a nine-year battle with cancer, she married Ronald Earl Allen on March 26, 1980. Together they continued their love for service throughout their 23 years of marriage. He died in 2003.
Rayola's life was a testimony to all. She experienced great trials throughout her life; yet, even greater were her blessings. With valiant determination and faith in the Lord, she made lemons into sweet lemonade.
Her children: Danny (Lynn) Cameron, Julia (Eugene) Smith, and Michael (RaNae) Barnes; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; step-children: Calvin (Dixie) Allen, Maurine Anderson, Melvin (Charlotte) Allen, Robert (Irene) Allen and Mary Jane (Gene) Beck; siblings: Robert B. Smith, Kay L. Smith, June Nelson, Hazel Petersen, and Alice (Ron) Olson survive her. A son, William Vernon Gordon, her parents, sisters Velma Tunbridge and Phyllis Howlett, brothers Ray B. Smith and DeVar B. Smith preceded Royala in death.
