Mrs. Sarah McDaniel, for many years a resident of this community, passed away about 4:30 Monday afternoon at her home in Marshall, Minn., following an illness of long duration. About two months ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis and then a second stroke a few days prior to her death.
Accompanied by her son, N.A. McDaniel, the remains were brought to Hawarden Wednesday afternoon and funeral services were held at the Barnard Funeral Home at 2:30 that afternoon, conducted by Rev. James S. Smith, pastor of the Associated church. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Sarah Jane Smith was born at Quaker City, Guernsey county, Ohio, May 24, 1851, and passed away Jan. 6, 1930, so at the time of her death had reached the age of 78 years, 7 months and 12 days.
In 1871 she was united in marriage with A.M. McDaniel, who preceded her in death Feb. 22, 1922. Four sons were born to this union, Orlando, who died in infancy, Alphonso of Hecla, S.D., Lemuel of Brown's Valley, Minn., and Nevada A. of Marshall, Minn. She came west with her family in 1880 and located to this vicinity where she underwent the hardships of the early pioneers. She resided here until her husband's death, when she went to Marshall, Minn., to make her home with her son, N.A. McDaniel.
She was ever a true friend and kind neighbor, and above all, her chief interest in life revolved about her home and family and the welfare of her loved ones.
Besides her three sons, those left to mourn her death are one grandson, Everett McDaniel, and two granddaughters, Mrs. Ben Jacobe of Hawarden and Mrs. Joe M. Case of Aberdeen, S.D. She also leaves two brothers, Lewis Smith of Hawarden and Alva J. Smith of Bellingham, Wash., besides a number of great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
