Evelyn Smith Black, 80, died August 20, 2001, at the home of her daughter.

A native of Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Heyward M. and Nora Tumlin Smith.

Mrs. Black retired from Greenville Memorial Hospital and was a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Celebration Choir and the Friendly Singles Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. J. C. Black, in 1968; and a son Joe Black, Jr., in 1975.

She is survived by her loving family: A daughter and son-in-law, Abby and Tommy Jay, of Powder Springs, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Charlene Black of Lexington, S.C., Larry and Cheryl Black of Asheboro, N.C., and Richard and Kathy Black of Greenville; sisters, Irene Jones and Frances Hand, both of Greenville, and Gladys Howell of Fountain Inn; a brother, Homer Smith, of Greenville; nine grandchildren, Thomas and Taylor Jay, Greg, Gerrie, Larry Jr., Brett, Kris, Jennifer and Caroline Black; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hampton Heights Baptist Church, with Dr. Chester H. Holmes and the Rev. Russ Rhinehart officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.

The family is at the home of Mrs. Black, on Piedmont Park Road.
