Leatrice (Lee) Clendenin passed away peacefully while in Hospice care at Highland Cove Retirement Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on January 28, 2014.

Her husband, Edward F. Clendenin, Sr. and her son-in-law, Michael Collins pre-decease her.

She was the mother of Edward F. Clendenin, Jr. (Pat) of Georgetown, Texas, Kathryn Hoffman (Gene) of Indianapolis, Indiana and Janice Collins of Salt Lake City; the grandmother of Erica Ann Collins and Sarah Collins Howard of Salt Lake City, Nicholas (Devyn) Hoffman of Las Vegas, Nevada and Alex Hoffman of Indianapolis, Indiana and the great grandmother of Steven Michael Howard and Michaela Marie Howard of Salt Lake City. She was the sister of Virginia (Ginny) Kausal, of Dayton Ohio.

Lee was born on October 24, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, the second daughter of Frank and Sadie Smith. The family moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940’s where Lee worked as a bank teller and volunteered for the USO during World War II. Always seeking a new adventure, she accepted a serendipitous USO assignment at Mountain Home, Idaho Air Force Base. Co-piloting the plane that transported her USO group from California to Idaho was Edward (Ed) Clendenin, the man who would become her future husband. Ed was an instructor pilot for the US Army Air Corp, having completed his missions as a pilot for the 376th Heavy Bomb Group in WWII. Lee and Ed married on November 4, 1945 in Los Angeles, and moved to Champaign, Illinois where Ed completed an engineering degree on the GI Bill. Ed’s employment took them to Indianapolis, Indiana where they spent the next forty six years, raising their family while Lee enjoyed being a stay at home mom. After Ed’s retirement, they moved to Salt Lake City to an independent living apartment at Highland Cove. Ed died on September 20, 2000. Lee continued to reside independently at Highland Cove until a few months before her death. She truly enjoyed her quality of life at Highland Cove, where she had a reputation as an excellent bridge player and a lover of desserts. She was a true friend to many of the Highland Cove residents and employees that she met over the past seventeen years.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park in Bluffdale, Utah, with burial beside her husband.
