He was born June 4, 1935 in Holladay, UT a son of Forrest G. and Sarah Jane Griffiths Smith, Price, UT. He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Jean Lewis, Oct 10, 1953 in Price. They have two sons, Michael Leon (Linda Nelson) Smith, Sandy, Ted Gerald (Darla Patten) Smith, American Fork; and seven grandsons, Daniel N. Smith, Jeremy L. (Melanie Schmo-yer) Smith, Orem, Stephen M. (Laura Bennett) Smith, Draper, Elder Matthew L. Smith, serving in the Brisbane, Australia Mission, Jared, 13, Joshua, 10, Jacob, 8. He really loved and appreciated his grandchildren and was proud of them and their accomplishments.
A 1953 graduate of Car-bon High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and retired with 20 years as a Chief Petty Officer. He then began his second career with the Government where he opened the Social Security Office in Price. He later transferred to the Provo Office where he was an Operations Supervisor until his retirement Dec 31, 1994.
He was a volunteer for the AARP Driver's Safety Program and served as an Assistant State Coordinator. He was also serving on the Committee for the Utah Work Incentives for People with Disabilities.
He is survived by his wife of Orem; sons; grandchildren; parents; sisters, Colleen (Dwayne) Hatch, American Falls, ID, Judi (George) Baker, Orangeville, UT; and brothers, Roger (Karen) Smith, Castle Dale, Greg Smith, Craig, CO. He was preceded in death by a brother, Grant (Bena Black) Smith, Price, and sisters, Yvonne Smith, Sharon Taldo.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff members at UVRMC for the loving care and support.
Services will be Wed. Aug 20, 2003, 11 a.m. Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 E. Center, Provo. Friends may call at the mortuary Wed. one hour prior to services. Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd, six miles south of Riverton, UT on State Route 68.
