James "Jim" Smith, 83, of Rock Valley died Wednesday, January 9, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.

Smith was born September 11, 1918, in Iuka, Illinois, the son of Roy and Grace Smith.

He graduated from Sullivan High School and attended Rankin Trade School in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Bronze Star and Silver Star and other medals.

He married Germina "Jeri" Smith on July 26, 1945, in Sioux Center.

The couple lived in Sullivan, where he worked for the Brown Shoe Co. before moving to Charleston, Illinois. There he worked for USI Chemical Corp. They moved to Rock Valley in 1991.

Survivors include his wife of Rock Valley; three sons, Roy of Pleasanton, California, Thomas of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Michael of Oakland, Maine; a foster son, Dick Wuchte of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a sister, Jane Edger of Mattoon, Illinois; and six grandchildren.
