Mary Ann (Sparks) Atkerson, 87 of Russell, Kansas died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Main Street Manor of Russell.

Mary was born February 13, 1924 in Marion, Indiana, the daughter of Pearl L. and Nellie E. (Warren) Sparks. She grew up in Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1942.

Mary was working for Western Union Telephone Company in Indiana when she met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Paris Leon Atkerson. They were married in 1948 in Marion. This union was blessed with two children; Lee Anne and Clifford. They made their home in Marion for a couple of years before moving to Hoisington, Kansas so Leon could work in the oil fields. In 1954 they moved to Russell where they lived ever since. Leon preceded her in death on November 7, 1999.

Mary was a devoted homemaker and wife. Her life revolved around her children and grandchildren.

Mary was a member of the Friends Church and she also attended later on the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Bunker Hill and Russell. She loved doing needle point and croqueting, traveling in the car, and watching NASCAR and golf on the television.

Surviving family include her daughter, Lee Anne Emmons and husband Alfred of Russell, Kansas; son, Clifford L. Atkerson of Russell, Kansas; five grandchildren, Kenny Cain, Amy Emmons, Robert Emmons, Cristy Atkerson and Craig Atkerson; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Joseph Sparks and granddaughter Cindy Atkerson.

Celebration of Mary's Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, August 5, 2011 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with Pastor John Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM. A memorial has been established with the Main Street Manor. Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
