OBITUARY

Melba Hathaway Benkelman died March 17, 2008 at Meadowlark Hills Care Center in Manhattan, Kan., where she had been a resident since 2001.

Melba was born June 6, 1916 in Marshall, Mo., the daughter of William Addison Sparks and Alma Hathaway Sparks. She was married to Charles Wilmot Benkelman March 26, 1939 and lived in McDonald from 1939 to 1975. They had three sons, Brent Layton, William Sparks and Paul Wesley.

Melba was a member of the McDonald Federated Church and the church guild. She was a charter member of the McDonald Garden Club and Chapter AX of the PEO Sisterhood in Atwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972, after which she moved to Atwood in 1975. She became a member of the First Christian Church where she took care of the flowers for many years. She was a member of the Town and Country Civic Club and the Northwestern Art Guild. Needlework, painting, books and music played an important role in her life.

Melba is survived by her three sons and their wives: Brent and Virginia of Manhattan, Bill and Susan of WaKeeney, Kan., and Paul and Georgette of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted March 27 at the Christian Church in Atwood with Pastor Chris Edwards officiating. A private graveside service and interment were held at Grace Cemetery in McDonald, preceding the memorial service.

Memorials may be given to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research, Kansas State University, 1 Chalmers Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-3901, or the American Heart Association.

Williams Funeral Home of Atwood was in charge of arrangements.
