CHESTERFIELD COUPLE DIES IN JAY COUNTY ACCIDENT
A Chesterfield man and his wife died Sunday in a two-car crash on a Jay County road when a 19-year-old Muncie youth failed to yield, striking the Madison County family's auto.
Harold Evans, 33, and his wife, Sandra, 30, of 915 North St., died instantly of broken necks, according to state police, suffered in the 5:06 p.m. accident on County Road 180 and County Road 25 near Portland.
The couple's nine-year-old daughter, Dannette, was pulled from the wreckage from passing motorists and given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She is in satisfactory condition at the Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie suffering from bruises on her entire body.
The accident occurred, according to officers, when a car driven by William Gardner, 19, Muncie, going north on County Road 25 failed to yield, striking the Evan's auto which was traveling west on County Road 180. The impact of the crash sent the Evan's auto several feet into the air wrapping it around a utility pole.
Gardner suffered a broken left hand and forearm, and severe cuts on the head and shoulders. He was treated at Ball Memorial Hospital and released.
A passenger in the Gardner auto, Kathie (?) D. Reel, Muncie, suffered cuts in the head. She is in critical condition at the Muncie Hospital.
A spokesman for the state police at Redkey said the accident was still under investigation. The spokesman said it was not known if charges would be filed against Gardner.
