Ruth Stanley Chapman, 88, passed away at her home in Jackson , September 3, 2009.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 8 from 10 AM to Noon at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home, 5235 Robinson Road in Jackson. A graveside service will follow at 2 PM in the Terry Cemetery, Terry, Mississippi, with the Reverend W. Tyler Pigott, Jr., Pastor of Woodland Hills Baptist Church officiating.
Ruth was born in Augusta, Illinois May 22, 1921 to Charles Ray and Myrtle Elizabeth Foster Stanley who preceded her in death. Ruth moved to Mississippi with her parents in 1927 when her grandfather, S. P. Foster, purchased Dixie Gardens Plantation. After returning to Illinois for a brief period in the late 1930's the family moved back to Mississippi in 1940.
Ruth owned and operated a flower shop in Terry, Mississippi and was active in church and civic organizations, serving as Terry's town clerk for 8 years. She was for many years an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron of the Crystal Springs Chapter #49.
In 1965 Ruth moved her family to Jackson and became affiliated with Green Oak Nursery when owners William K. (Billy) and Rita Martinson expanded the nursery to include a flower shop. Her tenure with Green Oak spanned 40 plus years.
During her years as Flower Shop Manager at Green Oak she was active in all phases of the floral industry. She held positions of leadership in the local units of Teleflora and FTD. She was a past president of the Central Allied Florists Association and the Mississippi Florists Association. In 1974 she was one of 14 florists from the US and Canada to be selected by FTD to receive that organization's Outstanding Service Award and was presented the Mississippi Florists Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 1976.
A lifelong Baptist, Ruth attended Woodland Hills Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Chapman Hill and husband Jack.
