Bennett E. Stelling, 91, formerly of Malta, Ill., died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center in DeKalb.
Born May 26, 1920, at home on the family farm near Orchard, Neb., he was the youngest son of Emil and Hattie (Kiihne) Stelling. Bennett attended a one-room elementary school and Orchard High School. After high school, he farmed with his father, raising grain and purebred hogs.
On his birthday in 1944, Bennett was united in marriage to Gertrude Hofer. Their early years together were spent living and working on farms in the Orchard and Tilden area. In 1957, the family left Nebraska and moved to Malta.
He was employed by the Wurlitzer piano company in DeKalb and later worked for the Northern Illinois University Grounds Department, retiring in 1985. A master woodworker, he created many special gifts, which are treasured by his family and friends. He was a perfectionist and took great pride in all his work. Some of his other hobbies were billiards, cards, gardening, reading and watching Cubs games.
Bennett was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sycamore, where he served as an usher for a number of years. He was a loving, devoted and hard-working husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother and uncle who was much-loved and will be deeply missed by his family.
The family would like to extend "special thanks" to Dr. Roger Billhardt of Rush University Medical Center for his many years of wonderful care and friendship, to Dr. Vasantha Gona and to the dedicated and loving staff in the CVS Unit at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gertrude, of Sycamore; three children, Ronald (Peggy) Stelling of Poplar Grove, Dennis (Sue) Stelling of DeKalb and Susan (Douglas) Moore of Sycamore; five grandchildren, Michele (Rick) Hansen, Scott (Shannon) Stelling, Dawn (Ray) Lindsey, Steven (Kate) Stelling and Eric Stelling; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; sister-in-law, Luella Stelling of Neligh, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Gilbert Stelling; and a sister, Ardis Gehrke.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Robert W. Weinhold and the Rev. Marvin Metzger of St. John's Lutheran Church, Sycamore, officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Anderson Funeral Home.
