Florence Irene Sweeney, 96, of Scranton, died Sunday. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Terrence P. Sweeney Sr., on Oct. 4, 2009.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Irene Reidmiller Wagner. She graduated from St. Mary's Assumption High School and was a parishioner of St. Paul's Church, Green Ridge section, since 1950.

In her youth, Flossie and her brothers and sisters were avid, excellent speedskaters at Mountain Lake, reveling in cold weather. Before marriage, she helped support her family by operating the loom in various area textile mills. Married in 1944, Florence then had a long and full life spent caring for her famly as a loving mother and a devotee of St. Ann.

Surviving are her daughters, Christine Sweeney Elling, Patricia Sweeney Ching and Mary Anne Sweeney; her sons, Terrence Sweeney Jr., Daniel Sweeney and Brian Sweeney; her grandchildren, Daniel Sweeney Jr., Nathan De Carlo, Robert Sweeney, Katelyn Sweeney Ching, Mitchel Elling, Matthew Ching, Fiona Sweeney and Noah Sweeney; her great-grandchildren, Porter Sweeney, Margo, Mikhail and Finnoula MacSweeney; sisters, Irene Guse, Alice Pane; and brother, George Wagner Jr.; many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Wagner; and sister, Louise Janowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton. Friends may call at the church Friday from 9 to 10. Interment Cathedral Cemetery.
