Sister Mary Ernestine Sweeney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, December 4, 1953 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 11, 1888 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Emma Toomey Sweeney. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1914, received the religious habit on July 6, 1915, and made profession of her vows on September 2, 1917.

Sister Mary Ernestine served as a domestic at the following: St. Joseph's Convent in Renovo, PA, St. Michael's Industrial School in Hoban Heights, PA; St. Patrick's Convent in Scranton, PA; and St. Rose's Convent in Carbondale, PA.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph (infant), Lawrence, John and William, and two sisters, Anna (toddler) and Mary E. Walsh.

She is survived by three sisters, Emily of Pittston, PA, Alice Emma Walsh and Frances, both of Scranton, PA, a brother, Frank Joseph of Scranton, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Monday, December 7 from St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA, with mass in St. Catherine's Church Moscow, PA. Interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Sunday afternoon at St. Agnes Place.
