NASSAU, Bahamas --Lady Margaret Symonette, wife of the country's first premier, Sir Roland Symonette, died from a stroke Sunday. She was 87. Her health had been falling after a first stroke three years ago left her partially paralyzed.

Her husband became the first premier elected in the Bahamas in 1964, when Great Britain granted the Caribbean territory autonomy and relegated its appointed governor to a more symbolic role in government. The title of premier was changed to prime minister when the Bahamas gained full independence in 1973. Lady Symonette supported her husband's political career up to his death in 1990.
