Sunrise Tribute to Marjorie Birnbaum:
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of resident Marge Birnbaum. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Marge attended Von Steuben High School where she met her sweetheart and lifelong partner her husband, Len. Together they had four children who Marge would speak of on a regular basis. Marge had many skills and various occupations which she took much pride in, such as Speech Therapist, Book Reviewer, Calligrapher, and Wedding Consultant. During Marge's time at Sunrise, she was very active and participated in most activities planned for the day. Everything from morning exercise, solving crossword puzzles, playing Wii games, attending community socials, to being a constant presence in our intergenerational programs, Marge was there! She was also a regular at the beauty shop! Weekly, Marge attended Shabbat services both at Sunrise and at her Synagogue Beth El, as this was a very important part of her life. Throughout her lifetime, Marge left a positive impact on so many including us at Sunrise of Highland Park. As we say farewell, we remember all of the memories created and shared with Marge and will continue to keep them near our hearts."

Marge was born in Chicago, the eldest of her siblings, the first to come, the last to leave and, therefore, is an end of an era for the family. Her father was a pioneer in the car business. Different decades brought different parts of the automotive business to his life, and he was quite successful. She went to college and graduated from Northwestern University in speech therapy. She did it in three years and that says something about her. She loved to teach and as we know she loved to sing and dance. She was involved in synchronized swimming, and eventually the beauty of art led her to the love of her life, to Leonard Birnbaum. Once they met in high school they never separated, except for the war years when Len had to go oversees to defend this country and democracy. At one point he asked his sister to give Marge a promise ring so that when he returned they would become a beloved couple. In 1946, at the Covenant Club, they were married. Their marriage was filled with love, devotion, respect, friendship, and most of all commitment to each other.
