Mary Rose Pete Jones, 86, of Rotary Street, Morgantown, died Oct. 9, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.

She was born Sept. 9, 1915, in Greer, daughter of the late E. Ray and Zula P. Powell Taylor.

She was a member of the WVU faculty, beginning in 1940 as a lab instructor and when she retired in 1976, was awarded the rank of associate professor emeritus. In the 1960s she served as interim assistant dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences, and interim director of the Division of Family and Consumer Sciences. She served as chairman of College Teachers of Foods and Nutrition in the North East Region of the United States and was president of the WV Association for Family and Consumer Sciences. She received many honors during her career including Alumna of the Year by Phi Upsilon Omicron National Honor Society, the Distinguished Service to West Virginia Agriculture Award and was listed in both editions of Who's Who of Women in the World and in Education.

Her community activities included service to the Community Board (forerunner of the United Way), being on the board and co-chairman of the annual drive. She was also active in the Red Cross, Monongalia General Hospital Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the League of Women Voters. She was awarded Life Membership in the Service League for 28 years of continuous service. She belonged to Spruce Street United Methodist Church for 70 years, where she served in many areas from teaching vacational Bible school to adviser for the senior group of MYF.

She is survived by a son and spouse, Terry Taylor and Emily Jones, of Morgantown; a grandson, Stephen Scott Jones, of Morgantown; a granddaughter, Deborah Lynn Canfield, of Charleston; a great-grandson, Grant Taylor Jones, of Morgantown; a great-granddaughter, Devin Leigh Jones, of Morgantown; two nieces, Carolyn Cole Wakeman and Kitty Cole, both of Atlanta; and a godchild, Susan Stout Hoffman, of Roswell, Ga.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, George F. Jones Jr., in 1994; and her only sister, Helen Taylor Cole, in 1989.

Friends may call at Dering's Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, until the noon service, with Dr. Ken A. Ramsey officiating.
