Fern I. Benci, 88, of Owatonna, died Monday, June 13, 2011, at Homestead Hospice House.

Fern was born July 14, 1922 in Valor, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Asa and Della (Kimball) Taylor. She was raised and attended school in Noonan, North Dakota and at the age of 15 moved to Butler Township near Sebeka, Minnesota. She worked in domestic help and as a hospital orderlie. She moved to Michigan to live with her sister and they worked at a plant making parts for the war effort. She married George Benci on January 7, 1946 in Washington, PA. They later divorced.

In 1951, Fern moved to Sebeka and worked 17 years for the Sebeka Review, the local newspaper, as a printer. In 1968 she moved to the Twin Cities and worked 22 years for Dunwoody Institute in the printing department. After her retirement in 1990 she moved to Owatonna.

Fern was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, doing puzzles and word finds, and socializing with friends at Real Life and Cedarview Care Center.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra (and Jeff) Boss of Owatonna; Brenda (and Carl) Lenard of North Royalton, OH; a sister, Myrtle Jenkins of Sebeka; three granddaughters, Jane Boss (and John Zacherl) of Minneapolis; Anne (and Lonnie) Mitchell of Waseca; Mary (and Nick) Lukkonen of Denver, CO; and three great grandchildren, Riley Mitchell, Tate Lukkonen and Fern Zacherl.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Klawiter officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 16, 2011 in the Hillview Cemetery near Sebeka. Memorials are preferred to the St. John roof fund or Homestead Hospice House, Owatonna.
