Daughter of Joseph M. Totten and Jennette Betsy Bell, wife of John Frederick Gardner whom she married on October 5, 1881 in Brooklyn, NY.

In 1855, Sarah J. Totten, aged 4, was living in New York City, NY, in the home of her widowed mother, G. Jannett Totten, aged 39, with siblings, Joseph A. Totten, aged 18, Maria L. Totten, aged 12, Henry C. Totten, aged 11, Ebenezer B. Totten, aged 9, and Van Vart M. Totten, aged 6.

In 1880, Sarah Totten, age 29, could be found living in the home of John Bell in Brookhaven, working as a school teacher.

Obituary - Mrs. S. Jeannette Gardner, widow of John F. Gardner, died suddenly on Monday at her home in Larchmont, N.Y., in her 73rd year. She was a well known resident of Patchogue many years ago when her husband conducted a bakery on West Main Street. As Miss Totten she taught in the Patchogue school. At one time she was matron of the Children's Home in Yaphank.
