VASHTI TUCKER

Vashti Tucker, daughter of Jacob and Martha Tucker, was born April 4, 1861 in
Decatur county, Iowa, and died in the hospital at Troy, Ohio, September 26, 1938, at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 22 days.

The family went back to their former home in Ohio and spent several years, then returned by wagon train to the same farm where she was born. This place was purchased by her father from the government. She experienced, with the family of eleven brothers and sisters, all the pleasures and hardships of pioneer life. Later they moved to Clarke county near Smyrna.

She was married April 5, 1879 to Thomas Bevard. To this union four sons were born, three of whom survive. The youngest, Thomas Martin, died Oct. 31, 1933.

The early years of her married life were spent in Nebraska, where they were again pioneers in a new country, working, striving together to establish their new home. At the urgent request of her husband's mother they returned to Iowa in 1894, coming to the farm near LeRoy, which has since been hers.

The husband sickened, being ill many months, passing away Dec. 24, 1899. The years that followed were fraught with sorrow and difficulties as she again strove to keep home and family together.

Vashti, as she was called by young and old alike, was ever ready to help a friend in distress. Many miles through dark or daylight has she traveled to spend at the bedside of some sick person, for it was one of the great joys of her life to minister to those needing assistance.

She was reared by devout Quaker parents, was a birthright member of that organization and remained true to the principles of their teaching.

Her family has been her first interest in life, and to them she has been a shining example of self sacrifice and devotion.

On November 27, 1907 she was united in marriage with Marion Vanlaningham. For almost twenty-one years this couple were devoted companions. His death occurred Sept. 27, 1928. Since this time she has made her home with her son, Robert and family, who have resided on her farm home.

Early in the summer she went to Ludlow Falls, Ohio, to visit her oldest sister, Sarah Mahaffy, and it was in her home she was stricken with paralysis on Sept. 18. A son, Ferman Bevard, was called, who left immediately, remaining until the end came. The oldest son, Frank resides at Cozad, Nebraska. He is in very poor health and unable to be present.

Besides the three sons, there are fifteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. There is a brother, John Tucker, who lives at Nampa, Idaho, and two other sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Wade and Mrs. Mary Selby whose homes are in Melba, Idaho.

Funeral services were conducted at the home of Ferman Bevard on Friday, September 30, by Rev. Hutchins. Interment was made in Last Chance cemetery. Pallbearers were Claire, Clyde, Dean and Glen Bevard, Hugo Scurlock and Claude Vaughn.
