Abess-Bertha. The Anti-Defamation League mourns the passing of Bertha Abess, wife of our honorary Vice-Chairman, Leonard L Abess and mother of ADL National Commissioner, Leonard Abess, Jr. The Abess family have been longtime supporters of the League and we honored Bertha with ADL's Woman of the Year Award. Bertha Ungar, daughter of Marcella and Arthur Ungar, a pioneer family in the Miami community married Leonard Abess. Her father, Arthur Ungar started an automobile dealership in 1918. Active in the community, he assisted in making Mount Sinai Hospital a reality, was founder of Temple Israel, and as a University of Miami trustee, help keep it financially stable in the early years of the Depression. * from "Jews of Greater Miami"
