Harriett VanBuskirk lived in Chemung, NY, from the time she was 4, and was possibly born there. When she was but five years old her mother, Abigail, died. As she has a younger brother, Andrew, listed as born in 1852, Harriett's mother may have died in childbirth or from complications thereof. Shortly after this death, Harriett's father married Susanna, who was 11 years his junior.

Harriett was 19 years old when she married 27 year old Isaac Howell, son of Jonathan and Almira Howell of spencer, NY. He had been discharged from Civil War duty only a year before their marriage. Although he suffered infirmity from typhoid fever which he'd contracted during his enlistment, he and Harriett had 7 children during their 17 year long marriage. Isaac died at the young age of 45 leaving his 37 year old widow to care for their children who ranged in age from 1 to 16.

On October 14, 1884 Harriett applied for a military pension per the following:
Harriet A. Van Buskirk Howell received a pension from the United States of America commencing on the 14th day of October, 1884 in the amount of $8 per month from October 14, 1884 and $12 a month from November 10, 1886 to be continued throughout her widowhood unless she forfeited her right thereto. She also received $9 a month for each child until each reached the age of 16. A copy of the original document from the Office at the Department of the Interior signed and dated in 1887 is available. Certificate #238414.

Harriett died at the age of 57 in Elmira, Tioga County, New York, and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, WAVERLY, Town of Barton, Tioga Co, NY[NYGENWEB]. In the family plot were also buried:

Howell, Harriet, wife of Isaac Howell, d. Oct. 5, 1904 at 59 years of age

Howell, Louis E. From Waverly, N.Y., son of Isaac and Harriet Howell, d. Feb. 5, 1959 77 years of age

Howell, Wilton H. Nov. 28, 1909 Waverly, N.Y.- May 5, 1939 Barton, N.Y. Son of Louis Howell and Carrie Hedges.
