Catherine S. Van Hoozen died, on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1897, at her home on Jackson street, in this city. Mrs. Catherine S. Van Hoozen, wife of John Van Hoozen.
Catherine S. Payne was born at East Schodack, Rensselaer County, N.Y., May 13, 1832, and was married to John Van Hoozen, Oct. 13, 1849. In 1854 she came with her husband to the state of Illinois. On one of the pleasant farms on the Queen Anne prairie, in the township of Greenwood, they reared their family of sons and daughters. Removing to Woodstock some years ago, Mr. Van Hoozen purchased the residence formerly occupied by Wm. H. Dwight, which has since been the home of his family.
Mrs. Van Hoozen possessed those sterling virtues which made her a true helpmate to her husband. Industrious, frugal and energetic and blessed with a cheerful disposition, she made her home genial and attractive to both her husband and her children. Through for many years afflicted with asthma, she had never been confined to her bed until her last fatal sickness. Beloved by her husband and children, contented with her appointed sphere in life, this loyal wife and affectionate mother passed the autumn of her life surrounded by everything conductive to her comfort and happiness.
Mrs. Van Hoozen was the mother of nine children, six of whom are still living, namely George C., Sarah L., Leverett, Emma E., Euretta and Nettie.
The funeral services were held at the house, Oct. 28, Rev. S.C. Hay officiating, and the burial took place at Greenwood. The family desires to express their heartfelt thanks for the kindness of their neighbors and friends during the sickness of the beloved wife and mother and in the hour of their bereavement.
