Former Anchorage resident Dorothy Stoddard Walling, 80, died Jan. 25, 2004, at Providence St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, Ore., of natural causes. Her remains were cremated, and her ashes were buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. At her request, no service was held.
Mrs. Walling was born June 4, 1923, in Anchorage to Dayton W. and Esther G. (Graham) Stoddard. In 1941, she graduated from Anchorage High School, where she lettered in women's basketball. She attended Edison Technical School in Seattle, then nursing school in San Francisco, where she earned her licensed practical nurse license. Mrs. Walling moved to Oregon to work at the Children's Farm Home near Corvallis. During a weekend visit to her mother in Salem, she met her future husband, Robert Walling; they were married Aug. 14, 1959, in Salem, Ore. Mrs. Walling enjoyed stamp collecting, gardening and boating with her family. Her children and grandchildren were the highlights of her life, her family wrote.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Tina-Marie Walling of Springfield, Ore.; daughter, Denise Hissner of Vancouver, Wash.; grandsons, Alex and Trevor Walling; granddaughter, Chelsie Culp; sisters, Vivian Laurie of Anchorage and Beth Allen of Sequim, Wash.; nieces, Alison Lewis of Wrangell, Fay Von Gemmingen, Kim Stanton and Cynthia Rabe, all of Anchorage, Deborah Allen of Renton, Wash., and Laurie Richmond of Hillsboro, Ore.; and nephews, Robert Laurie of Juneau and Robert Allen of Renton. Mrs. Walling was preceded in death by her sister, Fay Eskilson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
