BROWNELL, Laurie (Larry) Walter, age 93, died peacefully at home on Friday, July 31, 2009.

Born in Silver City, New Mexico, he lived in Arizona most of his life and moved to California in 1992.

A licensed contractor, he ran his own air conditioning, plumbing, and refrigeration business in Bisbee, Arizona for many years. He retired as Physical Plant Director for Pima College in Tucson, Arizona.

He served in the U.S. Navy in North Africa in World War II.

He was a life member of the Masonic Order and the Scottish Rite and was active in Sabbar Shriners. He was a member of the Marion McDaniel Lodge Masonic Lodge at the time of his death. After his retirement, he and his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) served as hosts at the Arizona camp for Rainbow Girls and he was several times honored as Arizona State Rainbow Father. He was also active with the Arizona Order for Eastern Star and served as Grand Representative to the State of Tennessee.

In addition to his longtime companion, Margaret Friedman, he is survived by his daughters, Martha Nelson and Cora Brownell; son-in-law, Clarke Nelson; grandchildren, Cal Nelson, Alisa Jones and Chaley Thom, and great-grandchildren, Ryann Nelson, Caden Nelson, and Lincoln Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1999.

A celebration of his life is planned at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent in his memory to the Northern California Shriners Hospital for Children, Hospice by the Bay, or The Margaret Todd Senior Center.
