Phyllis was born June 22, 1922, in Independence to August and Rose (Smieja) Weier. She married Leonard L. Kern on Feb. 20, 1943, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence. He died Dec. 26, 1983.
Phyllis and her husband owned and operated Kern Furniture Store and Funeral Home in Independence for many years. Phyllis also worked at Independence State Bank and John O. Melby and Co. Bank.
Phyllis was member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and its Women's Organization. She sang in the church choir for many years. Phyllis was an active member of the Rainbow Homemakers.
Survivors include three children, Kay (Tony) Dejno of Greensboro, Ga., Dennis Kern of Gays Mills, Wis., and Jim (Charaswan) Kern of Madison; a brother, Jack (Mary Ann) Weier of West Bend, Wis.; three grandchildren, Peter Kern, Greg (Kim) Dejno, and Brian (Blane) Dejno; and three great-grandchildren, Ansley, Bryce, and Addison Dejno.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. David C. Kunz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary. Visitation also will be one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
