Died, at his home in Knoxville, Tuesday, March 20, at 7:30 a.m., James Welch, aged 83 years, 1 month and 6 days. Death resulted from old age.
James Welch was born n Washington county, PA., Feb 14, 1817. In his youth he learned the chairmaker's trade which he followed for a livelihood for a number of years. In 1840 he married Miss Jane Thompson, a native of Philadelphia. In 1842 he removed to Ohio, and after a residence of four years he came to Mahaska county and settled in Oskaloosa, where he contined to work at his trade. In 1853 he came to Marion county, purchased a farm and engaged in agricultural pursuits, continuing until 1875, when he retired from the active duties of farm life and came to Knoxville to spend his declining years. He served as assessor for several years, and in 1880 was elected justice of the peace of Knoxville township. To Mr. and Mrs. Welch were born eight children: David Thompson, J. Y., Harriet (Mrs. Henderson), Margaret J. (Mrs. McMillan), Calvin, Jane, Mary (Mrs. Bender), Albert. Of these, two are dead - J. Y., who enlisted in the Eighth Iowa Infantry and died of disease contracted in the service; and Mrs. Henderson.
Mrs. Welch dying, Mr. Welch some fifteen years ago was united in marriage to Miss Jemima Stuckey, of Pennsylvania, who survives him.
For some years Mr. Welch had been failing as a result of his advanced age, and death came easily and peacefully like sleep to an exhausted man. He was a man of wide acquaintance and one who enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church tomorrow (Thursday) at 2 p.m., Rev. W.E. Sloane conducting the services.
