Funeral services were held Saturday, June 19, 2010, at St. Agatha's Catholic Church, Hope, for Mary Mitzel, 96, of Fargo, formerly of Hope, who died Tuesday, June 15 at Villa Maria in Fargo.

Burial was in Hope City Cemetery.

Mary was born Aug. 29, 1913, in rural Orrin, a daughter of Balthasar and Margaret (Baumgartner) Welk. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school in Sandale Township. She married Martin Mitzel on April 22, 1930, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Orrin. The couple lived on the Mitzel family farm, rural Orrin. In 1946, they purchased the grocery store in Balta, and in 1948, they purchased land near Luverne, where they farmed until Martin's death in February 1968. In 1981, she moved to Hope. In September 2007, she moved into Villa Maria.

She is survived by five children, Daniel, Alfred, and Cynthia Longtin, all of Fargo, Loretta Huschka of LaMoure, and Mary Lou Roller of Hope; siblings, Antonia Gutenkauf, Pierre, S.D., Emily Brossart, Rugby, and Pauline Mitzel, Granville; 25 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Balzer; granddaughter, Joletta (Mitzel) Ihry; three brothers, Michael, August, and Anton Welk; and five sisters, Katherine Thomas, Frances Weigel, Barbara Koble, Margaret Scheet, and Elizabeth Mitzel.
