He moved to Memphis as a young man, where through the years he had several businesses. He was co-owner of Memphis's Hotel Clarendon. He was also city salesmanager for two other businesses, and proprietor of A. W. Whitaker Buggy and Harness Co., which sold buggies, wagons, harnesses, and accessories--and some of the earliest model automobiles.
He was first married, in January 1890, to Raphael Martin Donelson, a third cousin. Both were great-great grandchildren of Col. John Donelson, via Donelson's sons Severn and William, respectively (brothers of Rachel Donelson--Mrs. Andrew Jackson).
Alexander and Raphael had two sons, the Rev. Alexander W. Whitaker, Jr. (1903-1970), and Martin Donelson Whitaker (1906-1989). Some years after Raphael's death he married again, to Dora Kennedy, whom he predeceased, and with whom he had no children.
He lived at 1268 Peabody Avenue in Memphis, and was active in the Westminster Presbyterian church, where he taught Sunday School for many years.
He died in Memphis at 86, of myocarditis.
