Raphael Martin Whitaker was born in Martha, Davidson County, Tennessee, the daughter of Ralph Martin (1810-1866 or 1867) and Elizabeth Charity Burton (1827-1903). In January 1890 she married Alexander Whyte Whitaker (Sr.), a third cousin, in Martha, Tennessee. Both were great-great grandchildren of Col. John Donelson, through his sons William and Severn, respectively (brothers of Rachel--Mrs. Andrew Jackson).

Her husband Alexander Whitaker was a Memphis businessman. They had had two children, the Rev. Alexander Whyte Whitaker, Jr. (1903-1970) and Martin Donelson Whitaker (1906-1989). The Whitakers lived at 1268 Peabody Avenue in Memphis.

Raphael Whitaker was injured when she fell in a street in an accident September 2, 1934, breaking her neck and hip. She died of a heart attack at 10:20 the morning of September 30th, at Memphis's Campbell Clinic.

She was buried in this grave at Elmwood Cemetery on October 1, 1934.

There is confusion about Raphael Whitaker's actual date of birth. This marker notes her year of birth as 1867. Her death certificate reflects a calculated date of birth of February 16, 1868. Her father's death date is variously recorded as 1866 or 1867, yielding no clue as to which year she was born.
