The son of Seth and Mary H. (Whittemore) Wilbur of Bridgewater, MA.
Charles was a 22 year-old Shoemaker from Bridgewater, when he enlisted at Middleboro, MA on May 8, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. D.
Charles was with his regiment from the time of his enlistment until he was admitted to the Columbian General Hospital in Washington on n Nov. 19, 1863. He was discharged from the hospital and returned to the 18th Massachusetts on April 1, 1864. He was engaged with his Regiment in the Campaign against Richmond, including the Battle of the Wilderness. He was wounded at Bethesda Church, VA on June 3, 1864, a minnie ball striking him in the chest and passing between the shoulder and left lung. He was admitted to the hospital and on June 15, 1864 transferred to DeCamp General Hospital on David's Island in New York Harbor. Charles was sent home on furlough on June 28, 1864 where he remained until mustered out of military service on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.
Charles was a member of the Fletcher Webster, G.A.R. Post No. 13, Brockton, MA. He married Mary Alice Packard on July 12, 1876 at Brockton, MA. She is reported to have died on Nov. 29, 1903 at Brockton and was interred at Union Cemetery. Charles moved to Venice, CA following her death.
