JOSEPH YARNELLE, 85, U.S. NAVY VETERAN - Oct 9, 1923 - Aug 16, 2009.

Joseph William Yarnelle, 85, Wabash, died Aug. 16, 7:40 a.m. at Wabash Skilled Care Center.

He was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Wabash to Kenneth and Lois (Elliott) Yarnelle. He married Peg Kratzer at Grace Methodist Church, Urbana, Sept. 1, 1945, she survives.

Mr. Yarnelle was a 1941 graduate of Wabash High School and attended Wabash College for two years. He was the former owner of Yarnelle Lumber Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church, both in Wabash.

He was a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also a member of the Wabash American Legion Post 15, the Wabash Elks Lodge, a charter member of the Wabash Country Club, and a former member of Wabash Kiwanis Club. He was a volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Meals on Wheels.

Along with his wife, he is survived by three children: Ken (Jill) Yarnelle, Wabash; Nan Yarnelle, Fayetteville, Ark.; and Jenifer (Gary Lee) Garvin, both of Minneapolis, Minn; Grandchildren James Yarnelle, Carmel; Joey Yarnelle, Fort Wayne, John Yarnelle, Wabash; Hannah Lee, Logan, Utah; two great-grandchildren, Arthur and Lewis Garvin, Minneapolis, Minn; and a sister, Mildred Paullius, North Manchester. He was preceded in death by a son, Denny Yarnelle, who died in 1947.

Funeral services will be held Aug 20, 10:30 a.m. at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Pastor David Cross officiating. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call Aug. 19, 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Animal Shelter of Wabash County of the First United Methodist Church.
