Calvin Cobb was born to Lucius M. and Mary E. Cobb. The family moved to Chicago before 1870, which is where Calvin mostly grew up. He married Fanny Lyon on Feb. 7, 1878, and for a time worked in his father-in-law's grain company in Chicago.

Calvin is first noted visiting the Boise, ID, area in 1887 as a livestock dealer. In 1888 he and two partners purchased land near Boise; in 1889 he and two partners bought the Idaho Statesman newspaper. He continued as publisher until his death. He was active in Republican politics, and also served a term as vice-president of the Associated Press.
