In 1919, she made her debut in "Othello" in Harlem's Lafayette Theatre. She also appeared in the plays "Tobacco Road" which she also directed.

Appeared in five films: A Son of Satan (1924) which was her only Silent film, The Lady from Shanghai (1947), The Joe Louis Story (1953), Interrupted Melody (1955), and Playwrights '56 (TV series).

Evelyn Ellis passed away in 1958, for the last 5 years of her life, she had appeared in off-Broadway productions including "Supper for the Dead".
