Arriving in a replacement draft on October 23, 1969 in Da Nang, PFC Stephen Geer remained at the Battalion Command Post in the vicinity of the Dai Lai Pass until he received his equipment and was assigned to Company H (Hotel), Battalion Landing Team 2/26, 9th Amphibious Brigade, on October 27 the unit was re designated as 2d Battalion, 26th Marines, 1st Marine, Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force commanded by Captain J. R. Wright. On February 21, 1969 the 2d Battalion, 26th Marines started its stand down and on February 28 Company H moved to the Battalion rear in the vicinity of the Dai Lai Pass and started deactivation.
On March 2, eight Marines including PFC Stephen Geer arrived at Landing Zone Baldy where PFC Geer was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, (Reinforced) Fleet Marine Force. Company A had been under the command of Captain J.K. Van Riper and since January 15 had been assigned to the CUPP (Combined United Pacification Program) an extension of the CAP (or Combined Action Program). PFC Stephen Greer's a unit would be conducting operations from the Thang Binh Village Complex south of the Song Ba Ren in the Que Son District of Quang Nam Province.
In the early morning hours of June 11 an intense 82mm and 60 mm enemy mortar barrage fell on the Company A, CP (Command Post) and the village of Thang Binh on the south side of the Ba Ren River in the Que Son District, of Quang Nam Province. NVA Sappers attacked the friendly positions throwing satchel charges and grenades into bunkers, and the civilian houses in the village causing chaos among the inhabitants. The CUPP Team 9's defensive perimeter was breached and by the time the enemy forces attack was broken, and fighting ceased, nine Marines, one USN Corpsman, four RF's and two PF's had been wounded; and LCpl Geer was killed as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds.
* LCpl Geer was presented a posthumous award of the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" device for his heroic achievement on June 11, 1970.
