Youth Crushed Under Tractor Youth Fatally Injured
REEDSVILLE—An 18 year old youth suffered fatal chest and skull injuries when
he was crushed beneath a tractor which overturned on his parents’ farm about
two miles north of this village on County Highway GG Sunday morning.
Myron Maertz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Maertz, was pronounced dead at the
scene by Dr. Daniel M. Pick, Manitowoc, acting coroner.
Authorities said Maertz was pulling a wagon loaded with green feed down a
sharp incline when the tractor he was operating apparently jackknifed and
pinned him underneath.
Tractor Slid
Investigation showed that the tractor slid about 80 feet down the wet incline
before it glanced off a bump at the bottom and overturned. The wagon remained
upright, however.
The youth’s body was found about 10:45 a.m. by a member of the family who
became worried about his absence. Maertz was last seen about 9 a.m. when he
went out to cut the green feed in a field.
Conservation Warden Herbert Vander Bloemen, who happened to be in the area,
notified the sheriff’s department via state police radio and teletype network
Sheriff Reuben A. Huntington and Deputy Marvin Hasche investigated.
Myron was born March 28, 1944, in the Town of Maple Grove, son of Harold and
Isabel Holmes Maertz, and was graduated from Reedsville High School with the
Class of 1962.
