Carl the husband of Janet L. Myllymaki of Agawam Massachusetts, the son of Carl W. Myllymaki and Rita Myllymaki of Westerly Rhode Island enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 28 1966. Upon completion of Officers Candidate School he was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant (Reserve) at Quantico VA. On extended active duty he arrive in Vietnam on September 26 1968 where he was assigned and served with Company E, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On October 2 a Recon Team was inserted on Dong Ha Mountain 5 kilometers northwest of Camp Carroll in Quang Tri Province. The Marines immediately set up security and several members began to move out when a booby trap was tripped wounding two men. One of the casualties was the team leader, 1stLt Carl Myllymaki, wounded and evacuated to the 3d Medical Battalion he died later the same day from the fragmentation wounds he had sustained.
