The Algernon Sidney Neal Post #89 of the American Legion in Yanceyville, Caswell County, North Carolina, was named in memory and honor of Algernon Sidney Neal who was killed in France during World War I. He was wounded 1 November 1918 near Bayonville, France, by a shell fragment. He was immediately evacuated to the hospital and died there as a result of his wounds 2 November 1918. The morning of November 1st a large assault was made upon the Germans along the whole front in the Meusse-Argonne Sector. Corporal Algernon Sidney Neal was one of a detachment of Engineers who went over the top with the infantry as a wire cutting detail. The assault was a complete success.
