Saxon Royalty. Born Prince Johann Georg Pius Karl Leopold Maria Januarius Anacletus of Saxony, Duke of Saxony, the sixth of eight children, he was the second son of George of Saxony, the King of Saxony, and his wife Infanta Maria Anna of Portugal. He was the younger brother of Frederick Augustus III, the last King of Saxony. He received a private education until 1881 when he began his military training. From 1889 through 1890, he studied law and after switching to the University of Leipzig; he primarily attended lectures on history and art history. In April 1894, he married first to Duchess Maria Isabelle of Wurttemberg, and, following her death 12 years later, he married Princess Maria Immaculata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Both marriages resulted in no children. Prior to World War I, he received numerous European honors, including the Kingdom of Saxony Knight of the Order of Rue Crown (1881), the Austria-Hungary Grand Cross of the Order of St. Stephen (1891), the Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece (1898), the Kingdom of Prussia Knight of the Order of the Black Eagle, and the Spanish Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III, with Collar (1908). He died at the age of 69.
