Nobility, Elector of Saxony. He was the eldest son of elector Friedrich II 'der Sanftmütige'. He and his brother divided their inherited territory in two, and he received became Prince-Elector. After his grand-son lost the electorate to the Albertine line, the Ernestine line lost a lot of its importance. They continued to divide their territories and split into several lines. One of the more important lines reigned in Weimar and another in Coburg. Members of the latter now occupy the thrones of Belgium and Great Britain.
