Alfred arrived in Vietnam 1 March 1968 and was assigned to Bravo Company,1st Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
LCpl Whitmer died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head and right arm during an engagement with enemy forces,during a combat patrol along a canal 7 kilometers east of Hue Citadel, Thu Thien.
LCpl Whitmer was 1 of 27 Marines that died during the combat engagement.
Alfred was single and served his country for 2 years.
Survived by his parents, Afton V & Lenora I Whitmer, and two sisters, Shirley F, of Safford, AZ., and Eva A. Cratty of Morenci, AZ.

Alfred joined the Marine Corps as part of the Morenci Nine, who all joined as part of the buddy system.
