Herbert Spencer Allan was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 13, 1886, to Robert Fotheringham Allan and Margaret Jean Shaw. His father was from Clackmannon, Scotland. His mother was from Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. His parents married and started their family in Canada before moving to Ohio in 1885.

His siblings were Gertrude J., Clarence C., Thomas A., Mildred Irene, Ralston W., and Kenneth Robert. There were two other siblings who passed away early in life.

Herbert was tall and stout. He had brown hair and blue eyes.

Between 1894 and 1896, the Allan family moved to California. In 1900, the family was living on 4th Avenue in San Francisco, California. The parents had a dry goods store where the eldest daughter was a clerk. Herbert's maternal grandmother, Jean Shaw, was an 80 year old woman living with the family.

During the next ten years, the family moved to San Mateo County, California where Herbert's father was a merchant. Mildred, Ralston and Kenneth were still living with their parents. Herbert was home sometimes because he was a commercial traveler for dry goods.

Herbert married Gertrude Wetmore, the daughter of Sherman Wetmore and Katherine E. Coffey of Columbia.

When World War I broke out, Herbert was required to register for the draft. At that time, he was working for the Klein Levy Company in San Francisco. He and Gertrude lived on Douglas Street in Burlingame, California.

At another time, the couple lived at 1207 Floribunda Avenue in Burlingame. They were both registered republicans.

In 1920, Herbert and Gertrude were boarding with a family in Fresno County, California, where he was a salesman for Wholesale Rubber and Tire Company.

The couple had a daughter, Audine, who was born April 29, 1920 in Stanislaus County, California. She was a student at U.C. Berkeley where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta fraternity.

When World War II broke out, Herbert was again required to register for the draft. At that time, he and Gertrude lived at 1110 Monterey Avenue, Berkeley, Alameda County, California, and he worked at O.P.A., 1355 Market Street in San Francisco.

Herbert passed away October 6, 1958, in Alameda County, California.
