My dad's uncle. Major Byrd retired as a highly decorated combat veteran of two Wars - WWII and Korea - including 8 combat campaigns. He was the first black officer in 1955 to command a unit in the Second Armored Division. In 1956, he was appointed the first black officer to teach Artillery Gunnery at the Fort Sill Artillery School. In the same year he was promoted to Major, holding that rank until retirement in 1961. Military decorations include: Silver Star (Korea), Bronze Star (Korea) Bronze Star (France, Luxembourgh, & Belgium), Croix de Guerre (Twice for liberation of France) European African Middle Eastern Campaigns (5 combat campaigns), World War II Victory Medal, United Nations Service (Korea- 3 combat campaigns), Army of Occupation (Germany), Good Conduct Medal, American defense, and American Campaign.
